The festival, which attracts tens of thousands of participants from around the world, is known for its temporary city, large-scale art installations, and the burning of a massive wooden effigy, known as “The Man,” at the event’s conclusion.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, which identified the female victim, is leading the investigation in Black Rock City. The victim’s name will not be released until her next of kin has been notified. PEOPLE reached out to the sheriff’s office for comment on the death and the ongoing investigation but has not yet received a response.
