The biggest honors were handed out for the fourth time by American critics in Hollywood to artists from the Latin film world.
Los Angeles, October 23, 2024 – The Critics Choice Association (CCA) held its annual grand award ceremony for the biggest Latin film and television programs, the 4th Celebration of Latino Cinema & Television, yesterday.
The event took place at one of Hollywood’s most prestigious and oldest movie theaters, the Egyptian Theatre, which was renovated by Netflix last year. Among the award recipients was Zoe Saldaña, who received the Pioneer Award for her performance in the film Emilia Pérez. Interestingly, the world premiere of the film took place just one day before the award ceremony, at the same venue. Critics honored Fede Alvarez with the Vanguard Award for directing Alien: Romulus.
Director Pablo Larraín’s Maria is likely to be one of the big hit films of the year. The film, which tells the life story of Maria Callas, stars Angelina Jolie in the title role and was directed by Pablo Larraín, who won Best Director at yesterday’s event. One of the film’s shooting locations was the Budapest Opera House. The other Best Director award went to Issa López for Maria and the True Detective: Night Country series. “I want to thank the American critics for this wonderful recognition. This award shows that we Latinos are capable of making such series,” the director said in her speech, later noting how the world often pigeonholes Latin filmmakers into the realms of soap operas and documentaries, and that breaking out of this box and overcoming prejudice is the hardest task in their profession.
Adriana Barraza won the Best Actress award for her role in the film My Penguin Friend, while Fernanda Torres earned the International Film Actress Award this year for her performance in I’m Still Here. Emayatzy Corinealdi won Best Series Actress for her performance in Reasonable Doubt, while Ramón Rodríguez was named Breakthrough Star of the Year for the series Will Trent. Apple TV+’s Acapulco won Best Comedy, while Familia de Medianoche (starring Renata Vaca, and Joaquin Cosio) won Best International Series.
Francesca Sloane was recognized as Best Showrunner for Mr. & Ms. Smith, and Gloria Calderón Kellett won the Hyphenate Award.
Sponsors of the event included Delta Air Lines, IMDbPro, Milagro Tequila, and STARZ’s #TakeTheLead. More details can be found at @CriticsChoice.
