The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that 85 countries have submitted films for consideration in the International Feature Film category for the 97th Academy Awards®, including Hungary. This year, Hungary is competing with Semmelweis, directed by Lajos Koltai, a historical drama that tells the story of Ignác Semmelweis, known as the “Father of Infection Control” and the “Savior of Mothers”.

The film portrays Semmelweis’s groundbreaking discovery of the importance of handwashing and sterilization in medical practice, particularly in preventing puerperal fever. Despite the revolutionary nature of his findings, Semmelweis was largely ignored by his contemporaries and did not receive recognition during his lifetime.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Lajos Koltai, who has contributed to many successful Hungarian and international productions, Semmelweis stars Vecsei H. Miklós as the young doctor. The film highlights one of Hungary’s most influential historical figures in a dramatic and inspiring narrative.

To qualify, submitted films must meet specific criteria, including a domestic theatrical release. Academy members from all branches can participate in the preliminary voting round if they fulfill the viewing requirements. This voting process will determine the 15 films advancing to the shortlist, which will be announced on December 17, 2024.

The International Feature Film category continues to be one of the most exciting aspects of the Oscars, offering audiences a chance to explore the world’s most compelling cinematic works.

In addition to the international submissions, the Academy also announced entries for the Animated and Documentary Feature categories. This year, 31 films are competing in the Animated Feature category, while 169 are vying for the Documentary Feature award. The shortlists for these categories will also be revealed on December 17, 2024.

Key dates for the 97th Oscars include the start of preliminary voting on December 9, 2024, and the nominations announcement on January 17, 2025. The Oscars ceremony will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby® Theatre in Hollywood, broadcast live on ABC and in more than 200 countries worldwide.
