Culture

Dr. Tao Qian, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute in Szeged, emphasizes the diversity of the Chinese people and cautions against judging them solely based on their behavior.

The Confucius Institute, operating for over 10 years under the University of Szeged, aims to promote mutual understanding between Hungary and China, support Chinese language learning, and strengthen academic cooperation with Shanghai International Studies University.

Currently, around 280 Chinese students study at the University of Szeged, showing great interest in the Chinese language and culture. They come from diverse backgrounds, with both extroverted and introverted personalities, but are universally described as kind and friendly.

With the increasing presence of Chinese entrepreneurs and workers, such as those connected to the BYD electric car factory in Szeged, Dr. Tao highlights differences between well-educated university students and some guest workers from rural areas. While guest workers may sometimes behave differently from Hungarians, they are generally diligent and responsible.

The presence of Chinese students and businesses in Szeged offers opportunities for economic growth and cultural exchange. The University of Szeged and the Confucius Institute aim to support language learning and cultural understanding, thereby preventing misunderstandings and fostering stronger community ties.
