HVG made an interview with János Kornai, famous economist and honorary doctor of the University of Debrecen. Kornai has been studying the well-known publication of Thomas Piketty entitled Capital in the Twenty-First Century. Kornai has also articulated criticism regarding Piketty’s book.
According to the Hungarian economist, although Piketty is concerned with the problem of inequality, he does not analyze the question from a wider perspective. Piketty also creates a false image of capitalism, since he does not show its virtues and mistakes objectively.
Kornai also emphasizes in the interview that origins of great wealth should be examined carefully. He does not think that for example Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg can be judged on the same scale with those who collect a great amount of money due to their illegal actions. „I feel respect for the former and anger for the latter.”
According to the Hungarian professor „unleashing” capitalism may be a huge danger for everyone: „A number of economists expect wisdom, composure, justice and competence from the state in the time of difficulties. However, a state is not a community of magnanimous and impartial wise men. It is led by politicians and bureaucrats, who are humans with prejudices and interests. There are many types of states and countries, and it is sure that Sweden, Norway and Denmark are closer to the idea of a perfect country, than for example Russia or the Latin-American, African and Asian states.”
