Government plans announced on Saturday to halve the local business tax will not help businesses, but will be the “final reckoning” for local councils, the co-leader of opposition party LMP said at an online press conference on Sunday.
Máté Kanász-Nagy called the measure “a dirty Fidesz trick” and said it would provide little help to small- and medium-sized businesses, but could practically mean the end for local governments. He said the government could offer real assistance by digging out the “hundreds of billions of forints earlier stuffed into the pockets of cronies” to manage the crisis. LMP is demanding a stop to the construction of stadiums and hotels, and it wants full wage support for people who are out of work.
