The government has decided to raise the wages of soldiers and police officers by 10%, the prime minister said in a video published on Facebook on Monday.

Viktor Orbán made his announcement after meeting police and military leaders. He said that “the government will also express its appreciation by providing a bonus of six months’ pay to policemen and soldiers in the next year”. “We will make further, significant pay rises in the next months and years to retain our police and soldiers,” the prime minister said in the video, thanking law enforcement staff for their “fantastic work in 2021”. He said the country could not have protected itself in the coronavirus pandemic without those efforts. Orbán highlighted the work of police and soldiers in hospitals, but also mentioned that they had prevented some 100,000 illegal migrants from crossing Hungary’s borders.
