The development of the domestic and world market price of bread grain, the expected yield quality and the nutrient supply of wheat were organized at the University of Debrecen in the XXIX. The subject of wheat consultation. It was said at the event: I will have enough wheat in Hungary, but the record-high price of grain will cause a significant rise in food prices in the near future.
Currently, almost 220-250 millimeters of rain are missing from the land. Due to the drought period, this year’s wheat crop is expected to lag behind last year. Compared to the national average of 5.9 tonnes reached in 2021, an average decrease of almost one tonne is expected this year,
– said Péter Pepó, a professor at the Institute of Plant Science of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management at the University of Debrecen on Monday. At a wheat conference.
According to Péter Pepó, the loss of crops does not endanger Hungary’s grain supply, as we use only 2.5 million tons of bread grain from the 5 million tons of wheat produced in Hungary.
The quality of this year’s harvest is not yet predictable. However, it should be borne in mind that in addition to the quantity of a stock raised under stress, there may be a problem with its quality. However, producers can do a lot to mitigate the adverse effects. The success of wheat production is determined by three factors: the environment and the weather, the choice of variety, and the agrotechnics and nutrient supply. The aim of the wheat conference is to introduce new techniques to farmers, which can significantly improve the efficiency of production even with such environmental factors,
– Péter Pepó explained.
Analyzing the world and domestic market processes, Zoltán Lakatos, President, and CEO of Hajdú Gabona Zrt., spoke about the fact that wheat production is going through a critical period in the world market.
The world produces 790 million tonnes of wheat a year. During the import and export process, 150-160 million tons of grain change hands, of which Russian and Ukrainian producers bring 55-58 million tons of grain to the market. It is mainly imported from developing countries. However, the Russo-Ukrainian war caused panic purchases on the world market, the effect of which is being felt by us,
– Zoltán Lakatos added.
The price of wheat per tonne was HUF 62,000 in 2021 and is now expected to reach HUF 135-140,000.
Currently, the purchase price of a kilo of wheat is 140 forints, but this means that flour can reach the shelves of stores at a price of 300 forints/kg. The price increase of about 40 percent is expected from July, which will later have a significant impact on the prices of the milling and baking industry
– emphasized the President and CEO of Hajdú Gabona Zrt.
The XXIX. The effect of nutrient forms and doses and the optimized nutrient supply of winter wheat were also discussed at the wheat conference. The experts were able to get acquainted with the results of the wheat experiments carried out at the University at the Visual Plant Experimental Plant of the Agricultural Research Institutes and Agriculture of the UD.
