Unilever Hungary to End Production at Southern Hungary Plant

Economy

The local of unit of FMCG giant Unilever will discontinue production at its plant in Röszke (S Hungary), laying off 80% of the 190 workers, Unilever said on Friday. The plant’s new owner, Mezőker will take over 20% of the workers. Hungarian-owned Mezőker has been Unilever’s supplier for almost 30 years.

Unilever will outsource production of close to one-third of the products currently made at the plant to Mezőker and move the remaining two-thirds to its own plants in Romania and Germany and to a European contract manufacturing partner. Unilever said it has to adapt to changing consumer needs and market conditions and concentrate production into its larger plants. It added that possibilities of expanding the plant in Röszke would be limited.

Unilever also has an ice cream plant in Veszprém (W Hungary) and a household chemicals plant in Nyírbátor (NE Hungary). It has invested 65 million euros at the two plants in recent years and plans further investments of 35 million euros in the near future. Unilever Hungary had revenue of 99.5 billion forints (EUR 24.9m) in 2021.
