Párbeszéd Proposes Referendum Before Potential EU Exit

Europe

The opposition Párbeszéd party wants the Hungarian constitution to include the stipulation that any potential “Hungexit” should only result from a valid and successful referendum.

Párbeszéd lawmaker Tamás Mellár expressed concern at a press conference on Tuesday that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the government wanted Hungary to leave the EU. Since joining the EU required a referendum, the same should hold true for an exit, he said.

The party’s co-leader, Tímea Szabó, said this would make it harder for Orbán to lead Hungary out of the community of western European nations. If a referendum was held on this subject, Orbán would suffer “an ugly defeat” because more than two-thirds of Hungarians still want to belong to a democratic system that, she insisted, the prime minister had “betrayed in recent years”.
