In March, annual inflation in Germany was 7.3 percent, the highest since the fall of 1981.
Inflation was 5.1 percent in February, the German Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, said.
Commodity prices rose 12.3 percent year-on-year in March from 7.9 percent in February. Within this, energy prices rose 39.5 percent after a 22.5 percent annual rise in February.
The rise in food prices accelerated from 5.3 percent in February to 6.2 percent in March, with prices for services rising by 2.8 percent year-on-year in February.
Excluding energy prices, inflation in March was 3.6 percent, and excluding energy and food prices was 3.4 percent.
Compared to the previous month, consumer prices rose 2.5 percent in March, after a 0.9 percent monthly rise in February. On a monthly basis, energy prices rose 16.4 percent.
The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP), calculated for EU comparison purposes, rose from 7.6 percent on an annual basis to 5.5 percent in February. On a monthly basis, the HICP rose to 2.5 percent in March from 0.9 percent in February.
