One year after his passing, the European Parliament will hold a ceremony to remember late President David Sassoli.
A short ceremony will take place to commemorate President David Sassoli and his legacy at 12:00 on Wednesday 11 January on the third floor at the Former European Parliament Presidents’ photo gallery (SPAAK building).
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will make a speech, followed by a minute of silence.
On the same day, a commemorative service in memory of President Sassoli will take place at 19:00 at the Church of Our Lady of Victories in the Sablon, rue des Sablons, Brussels.
David Sassoli, Member of the European Parliament since 2009, was elected President in July 2019 for the first half of the legislature. He passed away in Aviano (Italy) on 11 January 2022.
As President, Sassoli adopted extraordinary measures enabling the European Parliament to carry out its duties and exercise its prerogatives under the Treaties during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also played a prominent role in championing an ambitious long-term EU budget and effective recovery facility. In addition, the late President led Parliament in showing its solidarity towards the less fortunate when the crisis first hit, with supportive actions in the European Parliament’s host cities such as providing meals to charities and shelter in Parliament’s premises to women who are victims of violence.
