Europe Day – History

Global

Europe Day is an annual celebration of peace and unity in Europe, commemorating the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950.

The declaration proposed the pooling of French and West German coal and steel industries, leading to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, the first European Community, and hence is considered a principal founding moment. His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.
