Director Jane Campion movie’s “The Power of the Dog” led Oscar nominations in 2022. The American Film Academy announced the list of nominees of 2022 on 8th of February in Los Angeles. The 94th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 27, airing at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.

“The Power of the Dog” earned 12 nominations including Best Director for Jane Campion, Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch, and supporting acting nods for Kristen Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Cinematographer Ari Wegner is also nominated and if she  wins the award, she would write history, as she would be the first female cinematographer, who’s work would be respected by the Academy.

Next to The Power of the Dog, the spicy black comedy, Don’t Look Up – starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence -, Will Smith’s movie King Richard, the black and white Belfast, Nightmare Alley with Bradly Cooper, Spielberg’ s Westside Story, Dune, Coda and the Drive my Car will be in the competition this year for Best Picture.

In Best Actor category Will Smith “King Richard”, Benedict Cumberbatch “The Power of the Dog”, Andrew Garfield “Tik, tik…boom”, Denzel Washington “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, Javier Bardem “Being Ricardos” will compete for the golden statue.

The Best Actress category is Jessica Chastain “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”, Olivia Coleman “The Lost Daughter”, Penélope Cruz “ Parallel Mothers”, Nicole Kidman “Being Ricardos”, Kristen Stewart “Spencer”. Surprisingly former Oscar-winner Lady Gaga didn’t earn any nominations for movie House of Gucci from the Academy this year.

We might looking forward an other historical moment on this year ceremony, if Ariana DeBose wins the Oscar statue as Best Supporting Actress, in role ‘Anita’ in Spielberg’s West Side Story. Puerto Rican born actress, Rita Moreno starred as Anita in The West Side Story film, and went on to win Best Supporting Actress for her performance at the 1962 Oscars, as the first Latina woman to win an Oscar. If DeBose wins, she and Moreno would be the first pair of actresses to win for playing the same role in different movies.
