Internationally known fashion designer Michael Cinco literally became the glowing star of the LAFW in 2022. His collection – what he presented in the Petersen Automotive Museum, the imposing location of the Los Angeles Fashion Week, included breathtaking gowns with glowing materials – as the night sky… I asked the designer about his inspiration and his path, what took him to this stage of his career.
When and how did you decide to be a fashion designer? Is it a childhood dream or does it come later?
My dream of becoming a fashion designer started when I first saw a movie of Audrey Hepburn in MY FAIR LADY. I was 10 years old at that time and I was mesmerised by the beautiful costumes and couture gowns for the first time. From that moment I knew I’ll be in the fashion industry someday.
How could you describe your style?
My design aesthetics is all about luxury clothes with exquisite details of embroidery. My style is classic but fresh and updated, elegant and detailed juxtaposition of luxurious fabrics and Swarovski crystals. It’s for the women who are powerful, sexy and daring. Women who are married to rich men who have fabulous lifestyle.
Where do you get your inspiration time by time, collection to collection?
I travel a lot. I get inspiration from the culture, history, art and architecture of each place I visit. I love to visit museums and watch people on the street. I am also inspired by listening to opera music and watching classical Hollywood movies. And I’m usually inspired when I’m in love, I believe that LOVE is an inspiration for people to create beautiful things in the world.
You brought a very special, glowing collection also to the LAFW 2022. How did you come up with the idea?
My collection is very relevant to what’s happening in the world right now. We are living in this time of uncertainty and chaos. So I want to inspire people to be calm and at peace during this time of pandemic and threats. And this immaculate white collection called The Impalpable Dream of PEACE is a timely celebration of all that we strive to be amidst these chaotic times. The glow in the dark collection is actually inspired by the Northern Lights of ICELAND where I just came from a beautiful trip last February. I am always in awe of this magical phenomenon which I’ve been chasing Northern Lights for 7 years now. The beauty of it gives me calmness and serenity. It is akin to the release of all our stress and worries and inspires love and new beginnings. It transcends cultures and traditions. It is inclusive and most of all, it is born out of love. Let not be PEACE an Impalpable Dream.
Can you highlight some celebrities who chose your creations?
Lady Gaga is one of the first A-list Hollywood celebrities who wore my couture gowns on the red carpet. I also dressed up Beyonce, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Sofia Vergara, Kylie Minogue, Nick Jonas, Jason Derulo, Mila Kunis to name a few. Just recently Colombian singer MALUMA has been wearing most of my menswear collection from his world tour concerts.
Have you ever had a role model in the fashion world?
Audrey Hepburn and Mariah Callas have always been my muse in fashion. These two women for me are epitome of class and elegance.
Would you give special advice for your customers on how to wear your beautiful gowns?
The Michael Cinco woman should feel confident and look expensive and rich.
What is your opinion, what is a perfect look for a lady for her first date nowadays?
She should look like a woman in every man’s dream. She should look classy in a sexy Michael Cinco black dress. And most of all she should be confidently beautiful and be secure with herself.
