Debrecen University students and staff also tried to help the survivors of the red sludge disaster: around a half a million forints gathered within four days.
The Reformed Church of the University and College of Debrecen organized a collection between 18 and 21 of October to help the victims of the catastrophe. They made a proportionately scaled replica of the famous Kolontar reservoir and left it at the main entrance of the main building of the university. The donations had been placed inside the reservoir. In the foreground a photo exhibition illustrated the devastation.
– The red mud disaster was the most significant enviromental disaster in recent decades in Hungary causing huge losses in life and environmental and material damages. The action was designed to fill the reservoir with donations and thus show as a symbol that the reservoir could be filled with positive messages. said Daniel Puski preacher.
The donation came from hundreds of small and large amounts of private donations and from the weekly income of the coffe shop working underneath of the University Temple. The money is now primarily goes as a contribution of the cleaning works but later they want to support the reconstruction works too. Therefore the donations continues inside the Cafe Alpha and Omegathe where the reservoir is placed for the next couple of weeks. This effort is a part of the “72 hours without compromising” charity programme.
