The Flower Carnival is one of the most prestigious events of Debrecen. This year, we can see the colorful flower carts and the performances of art groups for the 42nd time.
The carnival has already started in June, when the flower carts of the Holy Crown and that of the city of Debrecen "travelled" to Cegléd.
The preparations are on. With the spirit of co-operation, the organizers wish to involve all the institutions, businesses and civil organizations. Due to this initiative, the shop windows in Piac Street will be decorated with flowers. People can vote for the most decorative shop window and the winner gets 100,000 forints as a prize. Shops will probably be open for long, and the building of 250 new parking places has started this week.
In 1900, there was a procession a cyclists, with bikes decorated with flowers. In 2010, this event gave the idea of „Bike to the Carnival”. As a new tradition, flowery bike(r)s are invited this year, too. The bicyclist demonstration will be organized by Tourinform. Their cyclist prom will be at Békás-tó, offering tests on traffic rules, bikes’ beauty contest, sightseeing cycling tour, etc.
On 17 August, 650 folk dancers will teach 5 kinds of Hungarian folk dances n Kossuth Square. Music will be provided by the Bakator Band.
Charity will also be present at the carnival. The Hungarian Reformed Church Aid and Dorcas organize a donation action together with the title "Send a flower". By buying a flower or paying the price of it people can support the needy in Transylvania. Cooperation can win over all crises.
Among others, there also will be a flower show and a carnival hair show. More information on the programs will be published later.
