According to the decision of the Parliament, 11 Hungarian sites has got the national memorial status. The Yellow Church (officially the Reformed Great Church) with the Reformed College is one of these sites.
Debecen was the capital of Hungary two times in its history: for the first time, in 1849, when the Hungarian Declaration of Independence was published. For the second time, in 1944, when the Temporary Hungarian Convention met there.
The status of national memorial site means an obligation of the state to ensure the financial and phyisical maintenance of the sites, to take care of it, and to make it seen by tourists.
Both of the Church and the College have been renovated recently – with this status, there is better chance to gain subsidies and to win tenders, and the renovation can continue.
