On the occassion of the feast of Tu Bi Svat (New Year of Trees), the Jewish community in
Debrecen signed the foundation document of the Association of Hungarian and Cross-
Border Jewish Communities and Organizations established in Debrecen on Sunday at 14.00 in the Árpád Hall of the County Hall.
The love of nature was important for the Jews even in Moses’s times, especially the
protection of fruit trees. The fact that even in war-time it was not allowed to cut down fruit
trees also proves this. This feast is the manifestation of this. Accoding to the Jewish calendar there are four New Years: the 1st of month Nisan is the feast and New Year of kings, the 1st
of Elul is the New Year of the tithes, the 1st of Tisri is Ros Hashana the synagogical New Year, the feast of creation, the beginning of the calendar year and 15th of Svath is the New Year of trees.
