A South American tapir baby has been born in Debrecen. The parents, Samu and Luna, met a year ago and their first offspring has already arrived.
After spending 13 months in her mother’s belly, the small female was born on Sunday night with striped, speckled skin and a birth weight of 6000 grams. The special pattern on the skin is a means of camouflage.
The new born will be taken care of by both parents until she reaches the age of 1 year. The visitors of the zoo can see the newcomer in a few days. The number of the tapir population has depleted, mainly due to the shrinking of their habitat. Debrecen Zoo has joined the conservation programme to save this species.
