Nine medals, four of them gold: under the eyes of Hungary’s President Janos Ader and the players of Hungarian football champion Debreceni VSC the hosts dominated the fourth day of the 31st LEN European Swimming Championships in Debrecen. In fact, it was the greatest day ever in the history of the Hungarian swimming.
Boglarka Kapas started the medal series in the women’s 800m freestyle (8:36.18min), Katinka Hosszu followed in the 200m individual medley (2:10.84), Daniel Gyurta triumphed in the men’s 200m breaststroke (2:00.60), and Laszlo Cseh added the fourth in the men’s 200m butterfly (1:54.95).
Additionally, the Hungarian swimmers also won three silver and three bronze medals. “To swim in front of such a crowd like this is a great motivation for every swimmer in our team”, said Hosszu. Hungary took over the top in the medal table with 6 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze medals, ahead of Germany (5-4-1), and Italy (3-3-3).
The remaining three titles on the fourth competition day went to Germany’s Jenny Mensing in the women’s 100m backstroke (1:00.08), the Italian women’s 4x200m freestyle relay team with Federica Pellegrini on the last 200m (7:52.90), and Israel’s Jonatan Kopelev in the men’s 50m backstroke (24.73sec), thus becoming the first swimmer ever to win a European title for his country.
