In Debrecen, the general assembly decides who deserves and gets free apartments, which are owned by the local government.
The Debrecen local government has 25 apartments. After the general assembly makes its decision, the mayor, Lajos Kósa has the final word about who gets the apartments. Those people could be tenants who do not own any properties or enjoyments in Debrecen and contribute to the development of the city.
The local government is discussing to give two sportsmen apartments. One of them is Éva Risztov, Olympic champion. She won the golden medal in swimming in 2012, so she received an apartment on Hajnal Utca for her internationally acknowledged success.
The other one is Norbert Kaluczka, professional boxer of the DVSC. Kaluczka and his family live on Kassai Út in a 42 m2 apartment. His tenancy agreement expires by the end of February, so he asked for its extension. This year he starts his preparation for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, and the extension would be a big help for him. The general assembly makes its decision on Thursday.
The local government gave 17 apartments with all modern conveniences for individuals and for institutions like MODEM or the Fazekas Mihály High School in 2014.
