Crows Attack Pets and People in Debrecen

Local News

The University of Debrecen reported that the number of crows nesting in Debrecen has almost doubled over the past five years. The urbanized bird species cause more and more problems in the city. By 2018, the number of crows nesting in Debrecen grew by one and a half compared to the data recorded in 2013. In some areas, for example in the northern part of the city, there is a surprisingly large increase of these birds.

Nesting habits of the crows has been influenced by the investments of recent years. The construction of the Nagyerdei Stadium, the construction of new blocks of flats and supermarkets, street façades and, last but not least, the extremely hectic weather conditions had a strong impact on the number of crows in Debrecen, but basically the number of these birds has grown, and the continuous increase in the past decade raises various problems.

According to Bence Szabó, university student at the Faculty of Agriculture (UD), crows have a very aggressive behavior, typically in their breeding season, and in many cases they attack not only pets, but also passers-by. The foil cover on the roof structure of the Nagyerdei Stadium is also regularly damaged by them, and a significant amount of birds can be spotted at Békás Lake, too, where they are catching fish, frogs, or even teals.
