Two Jackass penguins hatched on 14th and 19th December at the Debrecen Zoo.
They are in their nest-home providing safe by their parents currently, soon they move to the “penguin nursery” where they are being hand-reared by our zookeepers. The nursery has two toddlers now but new chicks are waited in the near future expanding the team of African penguins by this.
The African penguin is only found on the south-western coast of Africa, living in colonies. This species is threatened mainly by oil spills and by the decreasing amounts of their fish prey, a result of overfishing. They are listed ‘Endangered’, on The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
Debrecen Zoo & Amusement Park is keeping the Jackass penguin under the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria European Endangered species Programme (EAZA EEP) since 2008.
