It is not the end of January yet, but more people have traveled year-to-date from Debrecen International Airport than a year ago in the first month of the year.

In January 2018, a total of 24,072 passengers used the airport of Debrecen. This number was achieved already in 22 days this year. According to the forecasts, by the end of January 2019, a 35 percent increase in passenger numbers is expected compared to the same periode last year.

As a result of close cooperation between the airport and Wizz Air, the second base aircraft arrived in December 2018, with scheduled flights to new destinations such as Doncaster Sheffield in England, Dortmund in Germany, Barcelona in Spain and Basel in Switzerland. From 31 March 2019 onwards, Wizz Air will be launching three new direct flights to Malta, Cyprus and Mallorca from Debrecen International Airport.

In addition to Wizz Air’s flights, Lufthansa’s five-weekly service between Debrecen and Munich allows passengers to travel to many parts of the world. The Munich flight is often used by the staff of multinational companies in Debrecen.

As the leading airport in the region, Debrecen International Airport is prepared for a dynamic growth in passenger numbers. The passenger waiting room was extended on both sides (airside and landside), the water blocks were upgraded, and the number of gates was doubled. We have acquired modern tools for passenger services and hired new employees.

The modernization is important because Debrecen International Airport is set to reach 700 thousand passengers in 2019.

The fact that Debrecen is the economic, cultural, educational and tourist center of the region will greatly contribute to the expected increase in passenger numbers. The city sees the airport as a strategic partner. Debrecen intends to fulfill the role of the regional center through further airport developments and investments.
