The African lily (Agapanthus) is a richly flowering plant native to the Table Mountain region of South Africa. As a Mediterranean perennial, it requires wintering in continental climates. Although a common sight throughout its region of origin, it is considered a true curio in Hungary.
Also known as the lily of the Nile and the African blue lily, it now comes in all shades of blue thanks to breeders, and there are white varieties as well. Its bulbous rhizome develops arched bright green leaves and, swaying on long cylindrical stalks, its charming little conic flowers, 20 to 30 in number per stalk, assemble in orb-like shapes. Preferring sunlit areas, the African lily blooms from June or July and continues to showcase its blue beauty for a good while.
