The 10th International Red Panda Day is coming up this Saturday, September 21. Observed every 3rd Saturday in September, International Red Panda Day is dedicated to raising public awareness of this highly threatened Asian species and the importance of worldwide conservation efforts. Native to the temperate forests of the Himalayas, the red panda, also known as the lesser or golden panda or red bear-cat, is now currently as Endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species due to habitat destruction and illegal trade in wildlife.
As a red panda holding institution, we are hosting a guided tour combined with a feeding event on Saturday, starting at 11:00, giving you an insight into the species as well as various types of its favorite bamboo. From 13:00 to 15:00, there will also be thematic children’s activities involving the fascinating world of red pandas. All children with a red panda face paint, costume or mask shall receive a 50 discount from their entry fees. The proceeds go to the Zoo’s red panda breeding program, supporting the arrival and accommodation of a male individual.
The event shall be free of charge for all of you with a Zoo ticket.
