It was exactly 80 years ago, on October 10 in 1939, that Debrecen’s Big Forest was registered as the very first nature reserve in Hungary. Covering a total area of around 1100 hectares, the Big Forest has presumably been named after its particularly tall trees; indeed, it is still home to several common oaks well over 100 years old.
Ever since it opened to the public over 60 years ago, the Debrecen Zoo has been committed to showcasing and conserving not only the unique flora and fauna of all five continents, but the surrounding ecosystem as well; we have always favored an organic way of integrating our park in our environment by, for instance, featuring several plant species indigenous to the Big Forest.
