Retail workers union KDFSZ has asked Budapest’s new mayor, Gergely Karácsony, to urge big retailers in the capital to close shop early on Sundays, daily Magyar Nemzet reports.
In a letter KDFSZ sent to City Hall obtained by the daily, the union asked the mayor to recommend the voluntary closure of retail businesses larger than 400sqm at 2:00 in the afternoon on Sundays from the start of next year.
KDFSZ chairman Csaba Bubenkó told the paper that the recommendation would fit well with elements of the mayor’s policy platform, such as prohibiting overtime at municipal council-owned companies and taking steps against climate change.
He added that such a recommendation could set a precedent for the mayors of other big cities around the country.
The paper said preparations to gauge public sentiment on the issue were under way.
Hungary’s Fidesz-KDNP governing alliance earlier rolled back rules requiring big retailers to remain closed on Sunday because of the measure’s unpopularity.
