May 10 has been designated Birds and Arbor Day in Hungary since 1906, in order to raise awareness – originally among the youth – of these immensely valuable members of ecosystems and the importance of conserving them. Especially on this day, we should reflect on the fact that the rate of species extinction is no longer measured in decades or even in years, but weeks, days and hours.
That is why, besides being home to some 900 individuals of 170 animal species, including Hungary’s largest zoo population of estrildid finches, our mission includes the effort to conserve Debrecen’s Great Forest, Hungary’s oldest nature reserve, as a healthy ecosystem. Thanks to the mild weather, last year we managed to plant a total of over 5300 plants, including tree species native to the area as well as exotic curiosities. With the arrival of spring, we have now resumed planting trees, both for the beauty of our park and for the benefit of the ecosystem that surrounds us.
