Sun-Colored Beauty in the Scent Garden

A member of the daisy family, the pot marigold (Calendula officinalis) is one of the most versatile medicinal and culinary herbs around here.

Due to its Southern and Eastern European origins, this fabulous annual is well adapted to climate in Hungary, fairly tolerant of both droughts and mild frosts. With its striking orange capitula, it can serve as a fine addition to any garden.

The pot marigold has a long blooming season, lasting till autumn, for our great pleasure and benefit; its flowers are used in medicine as well as the cosmetics and paint industries. Flower collection between June and July should be carried out with caution as pollens are highly allergenic. It is easy to propagate by sowing although the rough surface of seeds can cause them to stick together, making the process a bit more difficult. Growing nicely from seeds dropped in autumn, the pot marigold is often found in grass and flower seed mixes.
