A key part of our mission is to help people connect to nature through encounters with animals they may otherwise never see up close. Since our collection includes a wide range of exotic species, visitors often overlook some of the “familiar faces” around them. After we reopen, make sure to check out our Bird-friendly Garden where a total of five feeders await local songbirds.
A lot of you may ask why it is important to feed songbirds. Surprisingly, the primary purpose of feeding birds in wintertime is not to keep them alive (they can easily survive winter even without our help) but to draw them to us. What an experience it is to watch tits respectfully pick one sunflower seed at a time!
A fairly complex one as far as wintertime bird conservation activities go, bird feeding requires us to be well-informed on all aspects. The literature suggests that we feed birds from the first frosts up until early spring; regularity in feeding is also essential since finding an empty feeder with no other source of food around may be fatal for a songbird. Once we have a proper feeder, we must also find something to put in it; the most common items include oilseeds, animal fat and fruits.
