Due to their evergreen nature, exotic beauty and unique oriental vibe, a lot of bamboo species make excellent ornamental plants as, for instance, a copse, hedgerow, background, screen, houseplant, or even a bonsai. Their timber, made from their strong and flexible stalks, is also a fine material for carpentry and constructions, with tens of thousands of apartments built from bamboo every year in Central America.
There are over 1400 bamboo species, ranging from dwarf shrubs to true giants 10 to 12 meters tall, with tiny to huge leaves and plain green to striped or banded leaves. A lot of species have edible and outright tasty shoots – no wonder there are bamboo-based food products galore coming out of the Far East.
Come check out our wide variety of bamboo species in and around animal enclosures and in the Bamboo Garden near our furry little bamboo-eaters, the red pandas, after we reopen.
