New inhabitants of the Debrecen zoo: emus

Local News

After many years, emupi hatched again in the Debrecen Zoo, after spending about 8 weeks in eggs. The three little ones of the unknown sex, who were born on May 2, will enjoy the care of their foster father for a long time to come, but they are growing nicely and are discovering their romantic catwalk with more and more autonomy, where visitors can see the whole family.

Native to much of Australia, the emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae), with a height of 150-190 cm and a bodyweight of 30-60 kg, is today the second largest bird on Earth. Their body is well adapted to life on dry steppes and scrubby lands, so they can stick without water for several days if needed. They consume green parts of plants, fruits and arthropods, and swallow smaller stones to grind their food.

Although they usually walk, they can reach speeds of up to 50 km / h while running. They live in pairs or groups, but breeding and rearing are the sole responsibility of the roosters. In addition to protecting their father, the chicks are also helped to survive by their striped hide color until they are three months old. As one of the most iconic representatives of Australian wildlife, this rugged ratite is also featured on the continent’s coat of arms.
