Debrecen Zoo: Meet Atos, Our Youngest Donkey!

Culture Local News
With a total of three donkey foals welcomed last year, we are happy to kick off this summer with the announcement of yet another new arrival. Born on May 22, World Biodiversity Day and the Day of Hungarian Nature, the little white male was named Atos by keepers in accordance with their tradition of naming donkeys based on what name day they are born on. Interestingly, Atos was sired by our grand old stallion named Laci – a resident since 1998 but very active to this day thanks to good husbandry and, not least, his excellent genetics. Although on his feet shortly after his birth, Atos is sure to remain by the side of his caring mother, Szamóca (“Strawberry”); come see them in their enclosure next to our Bactrian camels.

Besides exhibiting the rich and diverse fauna found all around the world, it has always been a key mission of ours to be also home to domesticated breeds (which are no less exotic in an urban setting), including Hungary’s only indigenous donkey breed. Thanks to their peaceful temperament and high intelligence, you will also get to meet them when our Donkey Carriage makes a return at our events in the near future.
Like a number of other residents, little Atos is yet to be adopted. If you want to make him really happy while also offering us tremendous help, please consider becoming a zoo foster parent. Further info at:
