In October, we can take a free walk to learn about the history of the Reformed Great Church of Debrecen

Local News

The iconic symbol of the city of Debrecen is the Reformed Great Church. Every resident of the city is well acquainted with the neoclassical-style building from the outside – but are we also aware of its history and significance? During October, the Church will also announce six free guided walks so that anyone can learn about the symbol of our city.

As the next stop in the “More than 200” series of cultural programs, every Tuesday and Saturday, the guided tours of the church await those interested between October 9-26.

Named “More than 200 steps”, the program introduces not only the sights of the Great Church, but also the sights of the church’s surroundings, such as the Kossuth Square statues, the city’s mosaic coat of arms, the lychee tree and the Memorial Garden.

The nearly two-hour walk starts every Saturday at 10 a.m. and every Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Great Church ticket office. All stops on the church’s visitor route are affected by the guided tour, including the attic space and the panoramic walkway between the two towers. The primary goal of the program is for the people of Debrecen to get to know the symbol of the city in person.

On several occasions, at our various events, visitors to Debrecen were most amazed at how much beauty and interest the Reformed Great Church has. Surely any of us will travel to Tihany, Pécs or any foreign city, for example, we will be among the first to visit the most famous church, abbey or cathedral in that city, while walking past the Great Church almost every day without entering the door. We want this to change for as many people in Debrecen as possible during October.

– Mária Siteriné Nacsa, professional leader of the “More than 200” program, explained the objective of the program.

The first time of the “More than 200 steps” will start on October 9 (Saturday) at 10 am, with the tour guided in Hungarian. Participation is free and open to anyone.
