Man steals money from his elderly, sick grandfather

The Debrecen District Prosecutor’s Office has charged a man who drunkenly abused his grandfather in order to obtain his money for a more serious robbery and assault offense.

According to the indictment, the 28-year-old man lives with his mother and his 74-year-old grandfather, who is visually impaired and also suffering from other illnesses, in their home in Nyírábrány. The accused arrived home drunk on March 21, 2021, at about 5 p.m., his grandfather, who was also drunk, was in the kitchen of the house.

The accused began to shout at the man and called on him to hand over the money he had. The victim did not comply with this, so the accused repeatedly punched the victim in the victim’s head and body.

The old man did not hand over the money he had after this but begged the accused to release him. The man finally complied with this, and the victim left the house and went to his nearby relatives for help, who notified the ambulance service.

The defendant broke one of the victim’s ribs as a result of the abuse, and bruised injuries to his face, head and chest. The victim’s fracture injury healed in four weeks.

The man was detained during the investigation carried out by the Hajdúhadháza Police Headquarters, and then the Debrecen District Court ordered his arrest.

The Debrecen District Prosecutor’s Office has indicted the defendant, who is still under arrest, for the attempted crime of robbery to the detriment of a person with limited ability to prevent the crime due to his or her old age and disability, and for the crime of serious bodily harm. In the indictment, the district prosecutor’s office filed a motion for the district court to sentence the accused to imprisonment and to prohibit him from practicing public affairs as an ancillary punishment. In his indictment, the district prosecutor’s office also proposed a specific amount of the sentence in case the accused confesses his deed and waives his right to a trial at the preparatory hearing of the district court.
