The Greek turtle family of the Debrecen Zoo grew

Local News

Another popular breed house can provide good news about the house of Debrecen, after their team of Greek turtles has grown with a total of six healthy offspring in recent weeks, said dr. Gergely Sándor Nagy managing director. What is interesting about the little things behind the scenes of the Palm House is that three of them saw the light of day in the hatchery of the institution and three in a natural way, in the catwalk of the animals – the hatching of the latter took longer due to the lower temperature. The adult public is sure to meet their adult peers for a few more weeks at the Mediterranean passage between the zoo and the amusement park before retreating to their winter rest area.

In the eastern part of the Mediterranean, native Greek tortoise (Testudo hermanni) can be found in grove forests, coastal plains and rocky hillsides. Daytime active; he takes a hearty sunbath in the morning and then spends most of his time eating. It mainly consumes green plant parts – it covers its water needs and largely from them – but it also does not sow insects and snails. It digs into the ground for the winter and withstands the colder months at temperatures between 2 and 5 ° C with a strongly restrained metabolism. It is a very popular hobby animal, but as a result, it is unfortunately also popular among illegal pet traders; In addition to habitat loss, catches have contributed greatly to the decline of wild stocks. It is currently listed as a Moderately Threatened World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List and is listed in Annex II of the Washington Convention (CITES), which provides protection against international trade.
