The facility’s ballroom is now named after a professor. The memorial plaque in honor of the literary historian András Görömbei (1945-2013) was opened by the city of Debrecen and the University of Debrecen on Tuesday at the Kölcsey Center – unideb.hu
András Görömbei, Kossuth Prize-winning Hungarian literary historian, university professor, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, honorary citizen of the City of Debrecen, would be 76 years old this year. From 1970 he taught at the Institute of Hungarian and Comparative Literature of the University of Debrecen and its predecessor, the Kossuth Lajos University, from 1981 as an associate professor, from 1992 as a head professor at the Department of Modern Hungarian Literary History. From 1995 to 2003 he was director of the institute. From 1989 to 1992 he was a visiting professor at the University of Helsinki, and from 1993 to 1995 he was the rector of education at KLTE. In the 1996-1997 academic year, he taught as a visiting professor in Vienna at the invitation of the Finno-Ugric Institute of the University of Vienna. Following his retirement, he worked as a professor emeritus until his death in 2013.
– “Non recuso laborem” – I am not reluctant from work. This quote attributed to Bishop St. Martin can be read on the plaque in his honor, not by chance, as it was also the professor’s slogan – László Papp said in his solemn speech.
– Throughout his life, András Görömbei worked at a high level as a teacher, researcher and advocate of Hungarians across the border, enriching our city as a citizen and honorary citizen of Debrecen. In terms of his spirituality, he is still here among us today – emphasized the mayor of Debrecen.
– It was characterized by a wide-ranging career, a work covering a rich area, with which he wanted to preserve and preserve the culture of the Hungarians living in the five continents. To achieve this, he researched and published three major topics in more depth: the XX. century Hungarian lyric, folk literature and cross-border literature. His work has been rewarded with several awards – said László Imre, a literary historian, academician, professor emeritus and former rector of the University of Debrecen, who is commemorating the University of Debrecen as a fellow, friend.
At the ceremony, Norbert Baranyai, a literary historian, assistant professor at the Institute of Hungarian Literature and Cultural Studies of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen, a former student of András Görömbei, recalled the professor with the participation of actors Anna Kubik and Árpád Bakota.
The ceremony ended with a wreath of the plaque at the Kölcsey Center.
