The air in Debrecen is unhealthy

Local News

More and more settlements have high levels of air pollution due to airborne dust, according to data released by the National Center for Public Health (NNK) on Thursday.

Six settlements – Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, Kazincbarcika, Sajószentpéter, Tatabánya and Várpalota – are already on their map with an orange color indicating unhealthy air quality.

In addition, air quality was criticized in a further sixteen settlements due to the high concentration of airborne dust. These are: Budapest, Százhalombatta, Dorog, Esztergom, Dunaújváros, Kecskemét, Szolnok, Szeged, Salgótarján, Eger, Miskolc, Putnok, Oszlár, Ajka, Veszprém, Székesfehérvár.

According to the National Meteorological Service’s air pollution forecast, a further deteriorating trend is expected on Thursday and Friday, especially in the northeastern part of the country. Fog spots can be formed in wind-protected areas, especially in the north-east, on Saturday and Sunday, and air quality in these areas continues to deteriorate.

The NNK warned on Wednesday that those in the vulnerable population (children, pregnant women, the elderly, those with cardiovascular disease) may experience mild respiratory symptoms. In the case of an unhealthy rating, patients with chronic respiratory disease may experience worsening symptoms, so it is recommended that they always have a standby medication (such as an inhaler). Anyone whose symptoms worsen should see their doctor, they stressed.

Health assessment of air pollution is based on an index. Four levels are distinguished: blue (acceptable), green (objectionable), orange (unhealthy), red (dangerous).
