Thousands of Trees are Planted in Debrecen With EU Support

Local News

The autumn-spring tree planting in 2021 will begin and a public procurement procedure for spring afforestation will be announced soon.

We will plant 5,639 small trees up to and including the autumn season of 2021 and the spring of 2022, while we will be visiting 40,000 forestry saplings with the protection of forests, which will end in the spring, said László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen. The spring reforestation – within the framework of the LIFE IP HungAIRy (supported by the European Union) program – will be carried out at Vértessy Mansion, Vincellér street, the area behind Tócóvölgy and Vezér street. In the autumn of 2019, at the beginning of the new local government cycle, we announced a new environmental policy in Debrecen. We have set ambitious goals and plans. We can be proud of what we have achieved in the last two years in the city in terms of environmental protection, green policy and the development of our green spaces.

The Green City Program is one of the key elements of the Debrecen2030 program. Recently, the Libakert, Vénkert, Sóház and Sestakert have been completed, the development of the Újkert is in progress and the Tócóskert Green City Program will start soon. In the development cycle of the European Union in 2021-27, we will provide significant, multi-billion forint funds for the continuation of the Green City Programs. In Debrecen, in addition to the development of green areas and parks, we also place special emphasis on afforestation. In the spring of 2019, we launched the 10,000 trees program in Debrecen. Together with the tree planting program for the fall of 2021 and the spring of 2022, we will plant 5,639 small trees and place 40,000 forest seedlings in various parts of the city. If we plant ten thousand trees in Debrecen, this will mean 32 hectares of shaded area in the life of the city, and will result in the capture of 450 tons of hotel dust per year – said László Papp.

In addition to the development of green spaces, the development of transport is also an important element of the city’s sustainability. A bus fleet with a Euro6 engine that meets the highest environmental criteria currently in force will be operational in 2022, complemented by 12 new, fully electric, fully environmentally friendly buses.

A city that does not have natural running water, with the exception of the Tócó stream, will, after decades of struggle, achieve the connection of the Eastern Main Canal with the city’s administrative area, which is a prerequisite for protecting the Great Forest from dehydration in recent years. I think this is the greatest achievement of the last few years’ environmental policy. Thanks to this HUF 16 billion investment, the waters of the Tisza will reach the administrative area of Debrecen in two years’ time. This opens up new opportunities for us, on the one hand, with regard to the dynamic green development of the districts along Tócó, and on the other hand, with the water supply of the Great Forest and the water supply lakes on the eastern side of the city, he said.

This allows us to think about tens of thousands of square meters of green space when building the second phase of the Tócóvölgy, to build a new Tócóvölgyi park, where we will not only build grass and playgrounds, but also have the opportunity to incorporate water into the green space. into our development programs – László Papp added. The construction of a large-scale solar cell will further strengthen the city’s sustainability character. In an area of 52 hectares, on the south side of the airport, close to the southern industrial area, in cooperation with Magyar Villamos Művek, the area will be provided by the city, we will create a large-capacity solar power plant. Through the investment, the amount of greenhouse gases will be reduced by approximately 33,000 tons per year – the mayor said.

It is not a question of whether large companies or individuals are responsible for the environment and sustainability, but whether everyone makes decisions and acts in their own lives in order to pass Debrecen in the best possible condition to the next generation. as we have taken over from our predecessors. The principle of the new environmental policy is to make Debrecen a long-term sustainable, green city together with the people of Debrecen. That is why we set up a Green Working Group, mostly of young experts in the field of environment and nature protection, and launched the Future of Debrecen movement together with the people of Debrecen – emphasized Ákos Balázs. To do some good for the environment, the people of Debrecen always come together, we could see this at the Civaqua idea competition launched by the Future of Debrecen movement. 274 teams from Debrecen delivered their better than better ideas, of which the three podium and the award-winning ideas will be included in the Civaqua program. After all, Civaqua is no longer a dream, with the support of the Government we will bring the life-giving water of the Tisza to Debrecen – the deputy mayor pointed out. We have established the Sustainable Debrecen Award for the companies that work with us for these purposes. We’ve launched TeSzedd! De inkább ne dobd el! garbage collection action and we joined the LIFE IP HUNGAIRY project to improve air quality. Last year, we built 50 innovative green bus waiters at the suggestion of the environmental working group, so Debrecen residents can wait for green buses in a green environment. The cooperation shows that we won the Tree of the Year award this year – emphasized Ákos Balázs.

With the development of housing estates, more than 262 thousand square meters of green space will be renewed. In Debrecen, the forest cover is 34% inland and a total of 5.4 million square meters of green space. In Barcelona, the forest area is 27%, with 1,795 hectares of forest, in Vienna it is 25% and 8,158 hectares are forested, the mayor said. We have also made significant progress in terms of the energy efficiency of our institutions, in 2020 – compared to 2013 – 263 thousand tons of carbon dioxide was released into the air of Debrecen – highlighted Ákos Balázs. The development of cycling has a key role to play in our city, and we currently have a network of more than 80 kilometers of connected cycle paths, which will expand by more than 25 kilometers in the next 1-2 years, the mayor pointed out.

He also added: we want the people of Debrecen to be able to adopt trees. To do this, we will provide the tree, the bag needed to water the tree, and a mobile app to help you take proper care of the tree.
