The work area has been handed over by the municipality, and the transformation of the “city gate” is already underway as part of the Green City Program. The details were reported on May 8, 2021 by the mayor László Papp and the parliamentary representative László Pósán, József Hetei.
The municipality reminds in its announcement that Petőfi Square will be renovated on 17,000 square meters, ie in its entirety. As a novelty, the center of the area will house a lake of more than 400 square meters, in which 800 aquatic plants will be planted. Next to the lake, there will be a 325-square-meter wood-covered terrace, to which a pavilion can be built.
“This pavilion will be implemented in a separate investment, but we intend to complete this building by the time the park is reconstructed. The primary purpose of this is to keep the square alive through a café or barbecue terrace. ”
– László Papp explained.
Also new as a new element is a 750 square meter rubber-covered, fenced playground with 12 play equipment and climbing blocks, as well as a special city history educational trail.
“Before World War II, this part of the city looked quite different. Beautiful historic buildings, the synagogue, the courthouse stood here. We present them on graphics engraved in steel, thus commemorating the architectural values of the city at that time. ”
– the mayor added.
Visual plans:
The investment in Petőfi Square is also part of a general green area reconstruction: 85 new trees, 3,000 square meters of shrubs and perennials will be planted, and more than 6,000 square meters of grass will be renovated in the park. In order to maintain the vegetation for a long time, they are also connected to an automatic irrigation system. In addition, street furniture: benches, seats, tables, bins, bicycle racks will be displayed. The public safety of the space will also be significantly improved by the construction of a space surveillance network of 14 public cameras and a public lighting system.
“Part of the attraction of the city is that it is livable, people have a good time there. Every development like this is another building block in the jigsaw puzzle about how to make Debrecen even more beautiful, even better ”
– said László Pósán, Member of Parliament.
József Hetei, the municipal representative of the district, said that in addition to improving the quality of life of the people living here, the transformation of Petőfi Square is also a significant step because those who come here get their first impressions of Debrecen as one of the gates of the city.
“A 21st-century environment is being created here, but through the city history study trail, we make sure we don’t forget the past.”
– added József Hetei.
The transformation of Petőfi Square will be implemented with HUF 900 million EU funds. The work will have to be done by the contractor in 10 months, so it is planned that the renovated park will be waiting for visitors here next autumn.
