Thirty-six Zaporizhia and Dnipropians, mostly hockey players, have fled Ukraine to Debrecen, and young people arriving with their mothers and siblings can wait for the end of the armed conflict at the University College on Kartács Street, the university’s press office told MTI on Tuesday night.
It was written that the University of Debrecen, the University Athletics Club of Debrecen (DEAC), and the Hockey Club of Debrecen (DHK) were able to escape the horrors of the Ukrainian-Russian war.
The evacuation of young people aged 7-14 and their parents was initiated by Ukrainian sports leaders through the Hungarian Hockey Association (MJSZ). For the first time, the MJSZ mobilized the clubs of the eastern part of the country, including the hockey team of the University of Debrecen, the university announced.
The bus required for transport was provided by DEAC, while meals were provided by Campus Nonprofit Kft. The meeting took place in Nagyszelmenc on the Ukrainian-Slovak border on Tuesday afternoon, and the group had been on the road for 31 hours. The club brought 50 food packages and mineral water to the little hockey players and their families – the statement quoted Zoltán Bács, the chancellor of the DE.
Márta Plásztán-Brehószki, the president of the Debrecen Hockey Club, which deals with youth hockey, emphasized that the entire Hungarian hockey society was united for the children and their parents.
“As long as the University of Debrecen and DEAC help with transportation and accommodation, clubs in the western part of the country, for example, can come with hockey equipment so that young people can play while they are with us,” the club president said. The bus carrying Ukrainian hockey children and their families arrived at the sports college in Debrecen on Tuesday, the university’s press office said.
