A representative suggested that public transport should be free in Debrecen

Due to the surge in inflation, DKV Zrt. has proposed an average 14.7% fee increase, the tariffs would be increased with effect from May 1, 2023.

DKV can raise its fees from May

According to the proposal that reached the general assembly in Debrecen, the increase is felt to be necessary due to the significantly increased energy prices, fuel prices, wage costs and other increased costs. As they write, these changes had a particular impact on the management of DKV Zrt., and thus on the maintenance of public transport.

As a result, the tram, trolleybus and bus timetables were modified several times. In line with the city’s efforts to save electricity, from January 14, 2023, on weekends (Saturday and Sunday), instead of trams, tram replacement buses will run on both lines.

The increase in fares in line with inflation ensures the necessary coverage for the full restoration of tram services on tram lines 1 and 2 from May 1, 2023, i.e. trams will run again on Saturdays and Sundays.

In addition to the price increase proposal, the vouchers should be named more precisely (e.g.: line ticket instead of journey ticket, day ticket instead of a combined ticket, and with the removal of the half-month pass, the use of the term general monthly, quarterly and annual pass instead of the combined (all-line) pass). Some vouchers will be phased out (group ticket; electronic pass with a photo, valid for half a month; additional pass coupons), and a new type of pass will be introduced, the electronic snow pass (with face, student, pensioner and small child snow pass).

The submission also included a proposal to amend the surcharge payment deadline, the surcharge amounts, the fee for subsequent pass presentations, and the ticket redemption.

At the meeting, Imre Vaszkó, a local government representative from DK, suggested that public transport should be free in Debrecen. The general assembly did not support this proposal, and the original proposal was accepted.
