Being the last Sunday of the month, the Debrecen Women’s Public Life Association of Kéretlen Figyelem shared food again in Debrecen. The menu was again stuffed cabbage with bread.
Announcement of the organizers:
“It is shocking how many people in the second largest city in the country – while they say that Debrecen is developing fast – live from one day to the next, vulnerable, in poverty, in misery, outcasts in the settlement that is called ‘caring’. If even half of this were true, surely fewer people would have to stand in line for free food on weekends. Even now, the queue was so long that it could be seen from the City Hall. There were many people, lots of them. It was a horrible feeling to see the poor people from Debrecen, pensioners, families with several children, people living on the streets.
Half an hour before the 11 a.m. start, we already distributed 150 meals. By the end of the food sharing, 185 of our fellow human beings with a difficult fate received a hot meal. Think about it: nearly 200 Hungarian people who can only live well in the 21st century, in the middle of Europe, if they stand in line for the civilian food distribution. We think this is very wrong. Unfortunately, those who could do something worthwhile do not want to hear the pleas for help from those on the fringes of society. How long can they bury their heads in the sand?
Poverty is no longer just knocking on the door, it is here in the country, part of our everyday life.
Those who walk the streets of Debrecen these days can see that a party littered the city with posters and street signs in the name of the election campaign. All of this is probably from public money, we do not think that the candidates will finance the not insignificant expenses from their own pockets. We believe that with the money that this party spends on posters, our guests could receive three meals a day every day of the year, because posters have not made even a single hungry child or adult live well. Is the proposal to spend the millions earmarked for the campaign to support the needy so far from reality? We don’t think so! We can’t do anything more, we are distraught, how many people are forced to stand in line for hours to get a hot meal, believe me, they are not doing it out of passion. We sincerely thank everyone for their support. We especially thank the help of the bakery in Debrecen, as well as the offer of the lady from Debrecen who brought her gifts to the children on the square every month.”
The association will next welcome its guests with a warm lunch on May 26th, 2024.
“On the occasion of Children’s Day, we are preparing surprises for the children who come with their parents. We respectfully welcome donations for food distribution and Children’s Day:
>>We are also waiting for donations from the residents of Debrecen, primarily SUSTAINABLE food, unlimited amounts of fruit, potatoes, apples, oil, cleaning products, children’s toys, books, sweets;
>>We expect computers and laptops for the children;
>>We are waiting for offers from Debrecen restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores,
>>We respectfully ask the wealthy people of Debrecen to help us host more and more needy people. Your donations would be greatly needed.”
