The BMW Group’s Debrecen plant has shifted into high gear: production of test vehicles has accelerated, and the first near-series examples of the fully electric Neue Klasse X model have started rolling off the assembly line. This marks the beginning of the final preparatory phase for the start of series production, scheduled for the end of 2025.
“The production of the first test vehicles in Debrecen is an important milestone for the start-up of the new plant,” said Milan Nedeljković, member of the BMW AG Board of Management responsible for production. As the vehicles get closer to series production readiness, all of the plant’s logistics and production processes are being tested under real conditions and continuously optimized to ensure a smooth start to series production.
Debrecen Series Production Imminent
In a plant, the launch of new models begins with the production of near-series vehicles – an important step in preparing for series production in Debrecen. During this phase, the pilot-produced vehicles go through all the production steps. This means that all logistics processes, production equipment, and employee operations must already run smoothly. These operations are just as complex as in actual series production. Despite the limited number of components, they must be made available within the framework of the appropriate logistics processes.
The Debrecen plant receives incoming materials and components daily, and test vehicles continuously roll off the assembly line. Every component and every production step is rigorously checked. Particular attention is paid to the validation of state-of-the-art production systems and equipment, including their digital connectivity.
Running system tests on future vehicle models helps identify further optimization opportunities. In the coming months, the focus will be on fine-tuning the processes based on the knowledge gained.
In this phase, new employees are also undergoing intensive training on equipment and machinery. The close cooperation of all production departments ensures that all processes fit together seamlessly when series production starts successfully.
