The air quality in the Sajó Valley has become hazardous due to suspended particulate matter, according to data from the National Public Health and Medical Officer Service (NNGYK), which was released on Wednesday and reflects the measurements taken the previous day.
The Air Hygiene Index system includes four categories: acceptable, questionable, unhealthy, and hazardous.
According to the NNGYK, the air quality is hazardous in Miskolc, Sajószentpéter, Kazincbarcika, and Putnok. Salgótarján, as well as Békéscsaba and Tököl, received an unhealthy air quality rating.
Based on the measurements, the air quality in cities like Győr, Ajka, Tatabánya, Székesfehérvár, Várpalota, Dunaújváros, Budapest, Esztergom, Kecskemét, Eger, Debrecen, Oszlár, and Hernádszurdok is considered questionable. The remaining monitoring stations recorded acceptable values.
HungaroMet Nonprofit Zrt.’s forecast predicts that southwestern Hungary will see increasing precipitation on Wednesday, and by Thursday, the weather will turn rainy in other regions as well. A cold front will strengthen winds by Thursday evening, and on Friday, the northwesterly winds will pick up.
By Thursday morning, air quality will still be higher in northeastern Hungary compared to other regions, but due to variable weather conditions, air quality across the country is expected to improve. On Saturday, the windy weather will be favorable, but by Sunday, the reduced wind speed could lead to higher levels of air pollutants.
