On November 8, members of the far-right group Betyársereg disrupted a meeting of the local chapter of the Szikra Movement at the Malter Cultural Center in Debrecen. Labeling it a “leftist cultural hub,” the group claimed on its website that they are monitoring such centers, accusing them of being supported by “foreign capital” and promoting extremist ideologies.
During the disruption, the Betyársereg confronted attendees, spreading propaganda and misinformation about the venue and its participants. They made derogatory remarks, including mentioning David Pressman, the U.S. ambassador to Hungary, in an inflammatory context.
Dombi Mihály, mistakenly identified by the group as the owner of Malter, condemned the incident, emphasizing that the Szikra Movement rejects all forms of violence and intimidation. He expressed concern over the group’s pride in its actions and questioned its justification for targeting peaceful gatherings of diverse individuals, including youth, adults, and seniors.
The event highlights growing tensions and raises concerns about the rise of political intimidation and far-right activity in Debrecen.
