Students and teachers from Debrecen schools maintained by the Debrecen District Education Centre collected non-perishable food, sweets, and cleaning supplies for Easter to support families in need connected to the Debrecen Charitable Organization.
As a result of this collective effort, more than 200 donation packages were gathered. The joint donation handover by the District Education Centre and the Charitable Organization took place at the Károly Kós Art Secondary School, Technical School, and Dormitory on April 14, 2025.
At the event, László Türk, Director of the Debrecen District Education Centre, said: When we collect non-perishable food, cleaning products, and sweets, we’re not just collecting those three items. He explained that if we look deeper into the meaning behind these things, we see that the food fills the Easter table, the cleaning supplies help make homes cleaner and more pleasant, and the sweets bring smiles to children’s faces.
“When we organize a collection before a holiday, we don’t just give material gifts—we also convey a message. I’m very proud that, once again, all our institutions stood behind this noble cause,” emphasized Türk László. He added that both the city and the Debrecen Charitable Organization can always count on the institutions of the District Education Centre to support good initiatives.
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles addressed students, teachers, and school leaders, emphasizing that donating to the needy is a truly noble gesture—one that should become a guiding principle for all institutions. She stressed that helping others is a key part of the cívis (civic) mindset and that it’s important for a caring city to stand behind those in trouble so they have somewhere to turn for support.
She called on school leaders to recognize the importance of unity in offering help, and asked them to report any disadvantaged students in their environment who may need support but are not yet in the city’s social system or among those aided by the Charitable Organization—so that they too may receive care. As she said, the spirit of unity and attentiveness thrives in the city, as reflected in its motto: Together we are Debrecen!
Edit Bódor, President of the Debrecen Charitable Organization, recalled that on Palm Sunday during the city’s Stations of the Cross, they handed out a cultural package to nearly a thousand people, offering spiritual support for the holiday. Now, thanks to the donations, they can brighten the Easter of 500 people in Debrecen. She added that the number of boxes collected shows that those in need can count on reliable support in preparing for the holiday—and it proves they are not alone.
The donations collected during the campaign will be delivered to families in need by the staff of the Debrecen Charitable Organization, with help from the owners of Ördög-Papír Ltd., who regularly support the organization’s work.
