Four homeless people living in a car in Debrecen

Local News

In the parking lot of a residential area in Debrecen, four homeless people live together in an old, non-functioning car. They go to the nearby park for their bathroom needs.

RTL Híradó reported on Tuesday about this troubling situation: four homeless people are living together in a broken-down car in the parking lot of a Debrecen housing estate. The car belongs to one of them. The man became homeless in May; he had previously lived in the area but moved into a non-functioning car due to family problems. During the summer, he lived alone in the car, but since the cold season began, there are now four of them. Although the space is cramped, at least they can warm up the cold car together and don’t feel the cold as much, one of them said.

Local residents are unhappy with the homeless people because they litter the parking lot and reduce the cleanliness and overall appearance of the street. The homeless individuals also go to the nearby park for both small and large bathroom needs.

The police are aware of the situation and have reported it to several social organizations. The municipality has not taken concrete action; their response was that they try to ensure both the residents’ peace and the care of the homeless. The owner of the car was fined 10,000 forints, but since he cannot pay the fine, he will likely have to serve a sentence. He stated that afterward, he will return to living in the car.
